Myofascial Tensegrity
Bodywork for students of the mindful awareness of the body

Massage therapy and bodywork is at the tensional edge of a massive paradigm shift. The old, 2-dimensional, mechanstic, dissected view of the body is evolving. The near-archaic view of our muskuloskeletal system is useful to understand the fundamentals, but our growing understanding of the body goes so far beyond.

The scientific community is beginning to meld with eastern philosophy, seeing a mind-body of exquisite, inter-connection in every direction. The neuromyofascial tensegrity web contains within it our vast experience as human beings breathing on this earth..... from muscle to tendon and nervous system.... to emotion, to memory to belief system.... touch the one, we touch the entirety.

Instrinsic, basic and essential, the tensegrity structure of our myofascia is, to borrow the words of Tom Myers, our "richest sensory organ" , relaying a myriad of information to us. We are creatures capable of exploring our proprioception, kinesthesia, interoception.... the experience of our senses. We are so much more alive than we ever thought. Science continues to reveal the intricacies of our anatomy in newfound ways.

Our myofascial system is woven into every depth of our being, including memory and consciousness. We change, we adapt, we evolve through awareness of this self.

This is the work of today's shaman, guiding folks to feeling the story of one's own body. It's work of expansive awareness.... of listening.... of gently guiding towards more freedom of movement, more freedom of breath.

Pain creates isolation, loss of energy, loss of mobility. It doesn't matter if it's physical or not; everything is entwined in an intricate dance... body... mind...nervous system... emotion.... belief... nothing separate.... all vibration of frequency, amplitide and vector.

I never know if we'll unlock what you hold onto. I can't ever know your truest pains. But, if we set a common intention for the highest good, we'll listen and move and breath together. We'll find patterns in your neuromyofascial river, ride the rapids and seek waters of calm and introspection.

This is bodywork of awarenesss... of breath... of movement. Of engaging proprioception, of engaging equilibrium, of listening, of observing. Watching for change in texture, changes in fluidity. Opening the senses and allowing change to happen all on it's own; unforced and unrushed. Listening to the wisdom inherent in our connective tissue.

There is not a single person on this earth that doesn't have a suffering locked away in their myofascial web. The body and the amygdala of the brain create a positive feedback loop... a pain pattern, easily triggered. What fires, wires. We look to disrupt that pattern by introducing a new wavelength.... we find the fascial melting point, guiding towards the expansive open. Guimberteaau shows us the fascial tensegrity structure is vastly intricate, continuous and has the ability to be remodelled. Ingber says we can effect intracellular biochemistry and gene expression though mechanotransduction. We rewire the body-mind as we engage the mindfull awareness of the central nervous system, detriggering hard-wired pain patterns with newfound patterns of ease.

An ongoing stream of consciousness can be found at my iPad aware massage blog, First of Nine.
