I don't know about you, but I could do without all the gloomy weather for a bit!<br /><br />Life has been wonderfully filled! Due to the increase in demand, I've created more openings in the week and am booking a few early evening sessions. I'm just one fellow and can physically do only so many sessions in a given week, so my schedule often fills up. Please, book your massage appointments early!<br /><br />I'm also taking a little time off this month. Next week, while my wife visits East coast friends and family, I'm going to take the dogs, grab a guitar and some books, load up the camper van and go on a camping road trip. Later in the month, Bhaktirose and I will make our second attempt to get down the Redwoods (we broke down last year!). Feel free to call during these times. East-West College of the Healing Arts ( http://www.eastwestcollege.com/ ), my old massage school, asked me to appear in their first TV commercial, along with 4 other massage therapists, including 2 instructors. They wanted to portray real massage therapists doing real bodywork in their own offices. My client during the filming was my dear friend and colleague, April Sykes, LMT. Though, you won't be able to see her joyful smile since she was face down in the face cradle.<br /><br />I tend to cringe when I see the commercials for the other massage schools. They don't look like real world situations, the LMT's body mechanics aren't very good and they look like they're doing such fluffy work with little benefit. We filmed a couple weeks ago. Still a little soar at times, but no big deal. I worked with my first clients today and it felt dandy!<br /><br />So, feel free to call for your next appointment. My schedule is fairly full for the next couple of weeks, but still have some slots open.<br /><br />One thing I didn't mention before.... the weekend before the surgery, I took my next Advanced Myofascial class on the spine, ribs and low back. Another great one! And, I only have two more classes before receiving certification in Advanced Myofascial work. Plus, my dear friend and colleague, April Sykes, LMT took the class with me! It's always nice to learn and grow with a kindred spirit!<br /><br />In other news, our little dog Chaya was bitten by another dog while playing fetch. Thankfully, it wasn't a fight. But, very inappropriate play displayed by the other dog. To be honest, Chaya gets so focused on chasing the ball that she probably barely noticed the nickel sized chunk out of her side.<br /><br />I brought Chaya into the vet last Friday, the day of the incident. The vet squeezed us in, even though they were overbooked and referring clients to other clinics. Chaya came home that afternoon with some colorful sutures in her side. Tomorrow, I'll be going in for a bit of minor surgery. Nothing very serious... just a fistula plug. It's something that's needed to happen for years, but thanks to a couple lazy doctors, had gone misdiagnosed for a great deal of time.<br /><br />I'm only supposed to be sore for a few days after the procedure, but it will be about 3 weeks until complete healing. My plan is to take that entire 3 weeks off. I'll be back doing massage on April 10th. <br /><br />The week or two following my return is already beginning to fill up. It's grown to become a time for reflection rather than celebration for me. Recently, I observed quite a few anniversaries... some joyous, some challenging...<br /><br />I've held my Oregon state massage license for four years. My mother and father passed away two years ago. And, it's been 15 years since my last chemotherapy treatment. I breathe with such gratitude... this life has given me such tremendous gifts.<br /><br />But, it's a new year and I'm looking forward to continuing this path of healing. At the end of the month, I'll be taking my next class which will focus on the neck, jaw and head. With this class, I'll be about half-way through the certification for Advanced Myofascial Techniques. It had gone mis-diagnosed for over 10 years by two different rather lazy western doctors. No worries. Nothing life threatening. I'm going in for a colonoscopy in mid-November just to check for anything else. I've begun seeing a gastro-intestinal specialtist at The Oregon Clinic and he's started me on a couple medications. I'm already feeling better!<br /><br />As I tune into my own healing needs, I'll be reducing the number of hours I'm available during the week, just to keep my energy up. I'm going to begin by setting office hours Monday through Thursday. At least once a month, I'll offer my services on a Saturday afternoon. The massage biz is clip-cloppity-clopping right along. Since Chaya, our doggie, has been injured with her broken toe for the past couple of months, we really have stayed pretty close to home. But, Chaya just had her splint taken off and is much, much happier! She still needs to take it easy for awhile... but, try telling that to a just turned one year old lab mix!<br /><br />I've been alternating between busy and slow weeks. The universe seems to give me just enough of a break just when I need it. For that divine wisdom, I am tremendously grateful.<br /><br />In other news, my newly re-awakened photography hobby is beginning to blossom. I'm now taking photos of more than just nature, bringing the human element into frame. Over the past several weeks, I've worked with several models and aspiring models, an acupunturist and even some family portraits for a friend... including my first paying gigs! <br /><br />As I turn more serious, methinks photography may be a nice way to supplement my income a bit. But, I regret I haven't written in some time. Business has been generally excellent since moving to the new office on NE Broadway. The space feels really good... nice and light and free.<br /><br />We recently had a bit of mishap. Chaya, our beloved 10 month old labrador mix puppy broke her toe. My wife was playing fetch with her at the time. Chaya ran to get the ball, caught it and then dropped. She was limping when she could be finally coaxed back up. <br /><br />We took her to the vet... a 24 hour animal hospital... and got her foot X-rayed. A nice, clean break of the outermost toe on the right, hind foot. She has a bandaged spint on now and wears a cone over her head when we can't watch her. She actually looks pretty darn funny! The first five days were the most tough. We had to keep her sedated and kept in her crate so she'd keep off the foot. Now, she's trotting around the house with great vigor (a little too much sometimes!) as her foot is beginning to feel better. The class was taught by Til Luchau of the Rolf Institute. I truly enjoyed the class, showing a new way to look at the dynamics of spinal health. I found the advanced myofascial work to be a natural evolution of the work I've been developing for the past 3+ years. I was so impressed by the teacher and the techniques that I signed on for certification in the techniques. I'll have to take about 5 more weekend workshops in the coming year and a half or so. I'm very excited to blend these deeply transformational modalities into our massage sessions!<br /><br />In other news, I had some computer problems last week. The hard drive in my trusty Powerbook frizzled out and my backup drive went haywire too! So, I just got the computer back from Texas after they repaired it under warranty. It's working great now, but I've lost quite a bit of data, photos, music, etc. The latest version of the website was also lost, so it'll be a bit before I update the site online as I cobble things back together.<br /><br />Rest assured, everything on the site still works. Thursday night, we brought home a 5 month old, female pit/lab mix from the Oregon Humane Society. Bhaktirose and I named her Chaya (pronounced Chai-yah), which means "life" in Hebrew.<br /><br />She is the sweetest, playful, loving, kissing, gentle ball o' energy you could imagine. Her intelligence amazes me. It took her about 2 minutes to learn to play fetch, returning the ball on command. She learned to shake in about 90 seconds. And, her housebreaking/crate training is coming along nicely. She's always ready to play at a moment's notice, but will just settle down at our feet whenever we settle down.<br /><br />It was a strange series of openings that lead to her adoption. After meeting her, and spending some time together, Bhaktirose and I were talking in the car. We figured we needed $1000 dollars to really get her on her way... for adoption fees, a crate, bedding, toys, food, vet check-ups, obedience classes... the whole lot. The very next morning, I got a call. A fellow was interested in buying my parent's TempurPedic adjustable bed. I had been unsuccessfully trying to sell this for over a month, placing ads in the Oregonian, the Willamette Week and Craigslist. He gave me an offer and by that evening I had a $1000 cash sitting in my pocket... the exact amount we needed!<br /><br />A couple other interesting tidbits.... Chaya was born on Bhaktirose's sister's birthday. Chaya was also transferred from a shelter in Idaho. When Bhaktirose worked for the tribes, she made friends that lived in this town.<br /><br />As I type this, she's curled up at my feet, wrapped up in the blanket on my lap. Chaya fills me with such joy... That's the path... to wholly accept all that we are given with an open smile and warm heart...<br /><br />This is a very special time of year for me. As many of you know, my father passed away last year. We brought him home from the hospital one year ago today, on Christmas Eve. It was the finest present I could ever hope for. He took his last breath on December 28th while I sat by his side in celebration... singing and playing drum.<br /><br />This season is also another personal marking point for me. December 26th, 1991 was my last chemo treatment. I have been cancer free for 14 years and goin’ strong! I observe this day each year with an introspective moment, calling it the Day of Beautiful Life.<br /><br />So, I’ll be back to work on December 29th.<br /><br />I cannot begin to express the thankfulness I feel for having known you during this lifetime.
